Indian World Heritage Sites of UNESCO

India has 30 world heritage sites — 24 cultural and 6 natural properties . While International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) evaluates nominations for natural sites to UNESCO’s World Heritage list The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) evaluates the cultural sites fit to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The World Heritage List includes 981 properties (as on June 2013) forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. These include 759 cultural , 193 natural and 29 mixed properties in 160 States Parties. As of September 2012, 190 States Parties have ratified the 1972 World Heritage Convention.

• Agra Fort and the Ajanta Caves were India’s first two sites to be listed at the Seventh Session of the World Heritage held in 1983.
• The latest site to be listed is Hill Forts of Rajasthan in June 2013
