• October 31 is declared as 'National Unity Day' by the government.  
  • The day will be celebrated as such in the honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who was born on the same date in 1875.
  • He is best remembered for his herculean efforts to integrate around 600 independent principalities into the Union of India post independence.

• Pankaj Advani clinches another world title - World Billiards Championship (point format) - beating Peter Gilchrist of Singapore in The final.  
  • Its his 10th individual World title overall and third this year after winning the World 6-Red Snooker and the World Team Billiards titles earlier.

• Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBPF) celebrates its 53rd Raising (foundation) Day on October 24, 2014.  
  • It was created on the same day in 1962 in the wake of disastrous Sino-Indian war to pre-empt any such future misadventure by China.
  • ITBP is one of the eight Central Armed Police Forces of the government; others are: BSF, CRPF, SPG, SSB, CISF, RPF and NSG.

  • Its in annual observance since 1973. 
  • International Development Strategy for the Second Nations Development Decade was adopted on this very day in 1970.
