Narendra Modi : The new PM of India

Narendra-Modi-3-asPMNarendra Modi on 26 May 2014 took oath as the new Prime Minister of the Union of India in a glittering ceremony held at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the President Pranab Mukherjee. Modi’s council of ministers, comprising of 45 members, also took oath. With this Manmohan Singh’s one decade long era as country’s power-center ended and UPA-II gave way to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Following are a few facts associated with Narendra Modi –

      He is the 15th Prime Minister of India

-       He was the 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat

-       He is the first Prime Minister to be born after India attained its Independence in 1947. Modi was born in 1950.

-       He is the second RSS pracharak (propagandist) to become Prime Minister of the country. The first was Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

-       He is the second Prime Minister to have been serving as the Chief Minister of a state when appointed as country’s PM. The first one was H.D. Deve Gowda, who was CM of Karnataka when he was chosen as PM in 1996.

-       His party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s vote share during General Elections (31%) is the lowest for a party to get absolute majority in India

-       His winning margin of 5,70,128 against Madhusudan Mistry (Congress) from Vadodara constituency (Gujarat) is the highest in the 16thLok Sabha

-       Total votes received by him in the Lok Sabha Elections 2014 (14,26,486) is the highest ever received by any candidate in Lok Sabha elections. These total votes include 8,45,464 votes he received from Vadodara and 5,81,022 votes from Varanasi.

-       When he became an MLA for the first time, he was appointed Chief Minister of Gujarat. Now when he became a first time MP, he became the Prime Minister of India.

-       He represented Maninagar assembly constituency while being the CM of Gujarat. Now he represents two Lok Sabha constituencies (Vadodara and Varanasi) as country’s Prime Minister, of which he has to resign from one.

-       His oath ceremony witnessed the largest-ever congregation of dignitaries and world leaders (over 4,000) for such ceremony. Swearing-in ceremony was held on the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
