Today is the birth anniversary of one of India's most loved authors, whose works gave India one of its most cherished tele-serials, Malgudi Days, and Bollywood, one of its most celebrated movies, 'Guide'.
No matter where in India you grew up the simple tune would immediately take you back to the time of Malgudi Days. And the grand story-teller behind it all- R K Narayan- A simple man from a simpler age. His literary works continue to weave technicolour emotions in the hearts of his readers.

Born on October 10, 1906 in Chennai, Narayan spent his early childhood with his maternal grandmother in Madras. He went on to obtain his bachelor's degree from the University of Mysore and began his career in his father's footsteps as a school teacher. He quit, when the headmaster asked him to work as a physical training master.

Narayan was drawn to writing, and contributed to a few English magazines and newspapers before he started his own publishing company- Indian Thought Publications in 1942.

The year 1935 saw him begin his writing career, with 'Swami and Friends', set in the fictional town of Malgudi. It later was turned into one of modern India's most cherished tele-serials.
